Tara Devi Temple is one of the most revered and historic temples located near Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. Situated at an altitude of about 7,200 feet, the temple offers a serene spiritual experience matched with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding hills and valleys. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Tara Devi, a manifestation of the Divine Mother known for granting blessings and protection to devotees.
The origins of Tara Devi Temple trace back more than two and a half centuries. It was founded by the Sen dynasty kings, rulers of the erstwhile Keonthal State. According to legend, King Bhupendra Sen brought a wooden idol of Goddess Tara from West Bengal after experiencing a divine dream. In this dream, the goddess and her guardians Lord Hanuman and Bhairav asked him to build a temple at this sacred location so that people could seek her blessings.
Initially, the temple was established at a lower site, but later, based on a vision received by King Balbir Sen, the temple was relocated to the hilltop of Tarav Parvat. In 1825, a magnificent idol made of Ashtadhatu (a blend of eight precious metals) was ceremoniously installed. The Sen dynasty has continued venerating this family deity annually, especially during the Ashtami day of Sharad Navratri, when a festive fair is also organized.
The current temple structure is a restored marvel of Pahari style architecture, meticulously rebuilt between 2015 and 2018 at a cost exceeding ₹6 crore. Artisans from Rohru and Kinnaur regions contributed their expertise in intricate woodcarving and precious metalwork, preserving traditional design elements while ensuring structural strength.
The temple features a beautifully carved wooden framework, ornately decorated doors, and interiors adorned with gold and silver. The main sanctum houses the deity’s idol along with statues of Maa Saraswati, Maa Kali, and Maa Bhagwati, emphasizing the temple’s spiritual inclusiveness.
Tara Devi is widely worshipped as a goddess of compassion and courage. The temple attracts devotees from across India, seeking blessings for health, prosperity, and protection. The tranquil hilltop location enhances the meditative ambiance, making it a perfect spiritual retreat.
The annual Tara Devi Fair held during the Navratri festival draws thousands who participate in rituals, cultural performances, and communal feasts. The temple’s rituals are performed with strict adherence to age-old traditions, conducted by priests and community elders.
Tara Devi Temple Shimla holds a special place in the hearts of devotees and history lovers alike. With its combination of spiritual sanctity, stunning architecture, and breathtaking natural beauty, the temple stands as a timeless symbol of faith and heritage in Himachal Pradesh. Whether you seek divine blessings, cultural insights, or simply a peaceful retreat in the mountains, Tara Devi Temple offers a truly unforgettable experience.
